Bible Passages

Searching for passages from the Bible used to be an incredibly time consuming and difficult task. As a matter of fact, some people spent their whole lives cataloging Bible passages. Early Bible concordances were truly remarkable. People would go through hundreds of different words and painstakingly catalog every mention of them in the book. The Internet has truly revolutionized religious study. Nowadays, finding a Bible passage is as simple as looking it up on Google. You no longer have to memorize every single passage of the Bible to be able to refer to scripture at will.

Most people seem to have favorite Bible passages. These are passages that have personal significance in their lives. The interesting thing about the Bible is that it is such a flexible book. There are some fanatics who claim that it can only be read one way, but there have been hundreds of different religious movements over the years, and they have used it in all sorts of different ways. Some Bible passages seem to advocate temperance, for example, while other ones seem to argue for a less restrained lifestyle. Sometimes a Bible passage will argue that the most important thing is living a righteous life, while others will argue that salvation is key above all other things.

The one thing that has always irked me about passages from the Bible is that people tend to take them out of context all the time. It is fine to have a favorite Bible passage that really speaks to you, but it isn’t fine to use it to justify things that it doesn’t mean. A lot of people seem to disregard the Bible passages that don’t suit them while only referring to the ones that they particularly appreciate. For me, if you view it as a holy book you should respect all of it.

Still, there is nothing wrong with keeping a few Bible passages close to heart. A lot of people enjoy having a personal motto, and there are few books more suitable to take your motto from than them the Bible. A lot of my friends choose a Bible passage that speaks to one of their weaknesses, while others choose one that speaks to one of the strengths. I prefer the former approach to the latter. It is good to have a constant reminder in your heart of some area in your life that you need to improve. That way, when you’re tempted to make the same mistakes that you usually make, you can think about it and have some guidance.
